For this shoot, I shot mostly with my Nikon D300 and 50mm Lens. I like to give myself this challenge from time to time and put a constraint on the gear. So a 50mm allows one to go for stronger compositions and well thought about shots.

Recently I had gone to the Sinhagadh fort in Pune to find this moment. We reached there early in the morning, well before daybreak and watched nature unfold its beautiful colors in front of us. It was truly a moment of peace which I enjoyed every moment.

Sinhagad or Sinhgad (The Lion’s Fort), is a fortress located roughly 30 kilometres southwest of the city of Pune, India. It is situated on a hill rising 800 metres above the surrounding countryside. Previously called Kondana, the fort has been the site of many important battles, most notably the battle of Sinhagad in 1670.

Night Guardian

The streets with dogs and walking people once in a while. There is an amazing set of character that lies with elongated shadows. The guardians of the night come out in full freedom and rule the roads.

The Followers

Apart from the dogs that roam the streets there are also the night workers. People who look for a time to spend amongst themselves, and often seen roaming the quiet streets in solitude. A drink is a welcome companion and a fellow drinker all the more. I have often felt that somehow the bonds that are made in these situations are long lasting.

When the rain falls on the road and the road is lit by the yellow street light, it is nothing but magical. The golden tinge that the whole scenario obtains is a sight to behold.

A missing foot

In the rush of the moment, though you have the well protected people who have an umbrella to make their way, there is another set who is alway rushing for shelter. I also love the challenge that moments like these provide.

Like for example this shot below; it was raining heavily and super windy. and i was worried about the camera too. I had to over expose the shot too in-order to get that tinge of color; so the shutter speed went further lower. As if that was not enough, add to that a very fast moving subject in the frame. A lot of things going on .. in that short time… and you get a quite a challenging shot to shoot

Fish have been around for 500 million years. Fish are cold-blooded, which means their internal body temperature changes as the surrounding temperature changes. All fish have a backbone and there are primarily three classes of fish namely, the jawless, the cartilaginous, and the bony. There are about 20,000 different species of bony fish alive today.

Any visit to the fish market is an interesting experience every time. The hustle-bustle of the people is always chaotic. What’s peculiar of every fish market is the peculiar smell that it carries in the air.It is something that is not found anywhere else. And many people that I have interacted with, mention that it is this smell that often puts them off and is the major reason for many to have and not to have it in the first place.

I love freshwater fish more than the sea fish. It’s perhaps because I have grown up eating only freshwater fish. Though of late I have developed a liking for the seawater fish. Unfortunately the choices to the fishes that I grew up were limited to 3 or 4. In a market like this, where there is a gamut of choices available, there is always a slight confusion in the mind. You wonder which to go for.

And that is where the people selling the fish come into the picture. I had a nice discussion with him and asked about the different fishes on sale, and he explained me about the bigger ones, the smaller ones, the bony ones and the not so bony ones, the cheap ones and the expensive ones, the crowd favorite, and the gourmet’s choice. There is something for everybody.

Small is Delight

Quite often in my conversations with the connoisseurs of the fish, I have heard that its the smaller size fishes that are tastier. On my part, however I associate smaller fish with more and thinner and more irritating bones, and more often than not I settle for the larger size ones. The bones are easier to take out, and as a result makes my whole fish eating experience more pleasurable.

What do you want?

Prior eating experience and the rates are the two prime factors in deciding which to go for. In my case, if I was purchasing, I would have gone for the Rohu fish.

Rohu - the favorite

The Rohu fish (Labeo Rohita) is the crowd (which not surprisingly, has a lot Bengalis in it) favorite and is the fastest selling item on the cart. It is therefore no wonder that the carts of the adjacent vendors are filled with this fish. In Hindi it is called rehu (rawas is the Indian Salmon, which is quite different). It is called rohi in Oriya, rui in Bengali, rou in Assamese and Sylheti.

Once the people decide on the fish, they get it to the fish dressing area. This is where its necessary to keep the hygiene in check. If one is not used to the smell of the fish, this dressing area can get really difficult to bear and it is best advised to stay away from far and shoot. I however could not resist going near to the action, as I had to take a few pictures.

One of the time consuming part about the Rohu is the removal of the scales on its body. The scales form an interesting pattern on the dressing chopping block.

After the scales are removed, the fish is ready to be cut into pieces and given to the customer.

At this point, my attention is diverted to some of the other action that is happening in the fish market. I spot other fishes kept in the distance, and have their parts cut out. The site is a bit uncomfortable,

The scene gets gory with more bloodshed and I move on.

I have always wanted to try out some new lights in my Light Painting workshops, that could allow one to play with the patterns formation. One fine day in the supermarket I spotted these Made in China multiple LED lights that were rechargable. It was being sold as Rechargabe Emergency Lights. They were available in different varieties, namely 10 LED, 20 LED, and 42 LEDs too. And I knew instantly that I needed to try these out! I bought a couple 42 LED ones. They were white lights, but the use of colored paper allowed me to explore the other light sources as well.

Exploring New Lights

And I was right. The patterns were sharp and just as I had expected. Even though the lights cost me a bit high, I was willing to take the risk to try it out. It did not work out well in the first workshop that I used it, but in the second workshop that I asked the participants to use it, the results were wonderful.

And again the month of February had people drawing more hearts. The interesting part of this was that this was a pattern formation here.

I am out to NIT Surat next, and am hoping that the participants there would be able to take up the challenge and try it out more and come up with something more wonderful!

The hit so far has been the ‘Light Painting Workshop’ and I am really glad that the participants like it. Their feedback after the workshops has been very positive and it motivates me more. I think that the best part about workshops is the fact that you get to share knowledge with people. This feeling is so satisfying that nothing can be compared to it. It is also knowing that the person you are teaching could end up being better than you in the art you are teaching. But I think that is more of an honor to the teacher than a threat.

Hand Patterns

I have been observing the participants and the creativity that they showcase is absolutely wonderful. Every workshop ends up in something out of the box. With more and more ideas floating around, I am able to guide the participants to a larger extent to execute their ideas. This has resulted in their works improving drastically and also the possibility of thinking beyond.

This not only gives us some really wow pictures, but also inspires me as a photographer to increase the efforts in each workshop.

College Love

After taking the Volvo to Surathkal, I landed one early morning in front of the gates of the college. The college campus is divided into two parts by the National Highway # 17. On one side is the main building, the auditoriums, the hsotels. The other side of the campus has the guest houses, the newer departments, and hold your breath… the private beach. Yes you read it right! NITK Surathkal, happens to be one of the only two colleges in the world that has its own private beach.

Perhaps the only thing that I did not like was the humid weather, due to the sea. But I think if one had to stay there for a longer time, one would get used to it and remain cool always

The workshop at NIT Surathkal was wonderful. I was amazed at the kind of ideas that the participants came up with. I show a lot of images in my workshops. (Of course that is what you would do in a photography workshop). This has led to an interesting thing in my workshops. The students always aim to do something that is not shown to them. So there is always something new that comes out of the workshop.

There are many ways to create a Light Painting, and this is another of it. During my workshop, I give a practical demonstration of how to do each and every one of it, and during the practical sessions, ensure that the participants try them out. In my opinion, this is the aspect of the workshop that makes it a hit. Allowing people with hands on experience themselves.

The Singer and his Audience

I thought this guy must have been a vocalist himself, or in love with music. The interesting part was that they got this in the first attempt, and I was impressed with the whole idea.

Vortex Patterns

Many of the participants end up lost, and do not know what to make. So the way out for them is to have them create interesting patterns out of the lights that are provided to them!

The Proposal

This is one shot you generally expect and are not surprised by. College kids always end up making themes related to love. Note how the person on the right is actually a boy, but in the painting (the outline), it is a girl ! Did you see the ponytail of the hair? Talk about Improvisation!

Passion is Football

Oh I love this shot! Simple, taken in one stroke, but looks so wonderful. Just shows the passion that the person had towards the game. This is another thing I stress on in my workshops. Paint things that you are passionate about, or love to do.

And sometimes, that passionate things could also be just to Kick yourself! Super Simple.. Still very creatively done!

Psychedelic

I am not sure what the participants tried creating here, but it looked like the person on the right is a god like creature, emanating light all around him, and the people on the left are seeking his blessings or something.

In the end, I was very happy with the outcome of the workshop. At the end I asked the organizers, what the feedback about the workshop was. They mentioned that all the participants loved the workshop.

I feel glad.

Attention Seeker

From my very first time I saw a Bullet, till today, I do not recall a single instance when a passing Bullet vehicle did not get my attention. The sound, the build of the body, or just the sheer wheel span. Everything in it makes a statement. A statement that has stood up to its times and still continues to live on as a living legacy.

A desire

I do not know when I will be in a position well geared up to own a Bullet myself. My friends having it make up for it, but not for too long. The sheer ruggedness makes me want to own it. There is a unique feeling to riding a bullet. Something which is beyond words, and only who rides it knows best.

Epitome of Engineering

I am sure that not many would deny the fact that the Bullet bikes have been an epitome of Engineering over the years. Right for over 50 years now, it has been enthralling its riders all throughout. I wonder if the original makers of this bikes ever predicted the success that it would bring it.

Lighting the way always

Elements of the bike makes it a cult classic. The ever present rounded lights and the boldness that it brings along with itself is a statement in itself.

One of the most liked things about the Bullet machines is its Engine. It is therefore only natural to get a closer look at the components. the characteristic shape of the parts also makes it a cult classic.

It is important to view this engineering marvel from the core.The harmonious placement of elements make it a visual treat, not only from the outside, and its sound, but also at its inside.

Dhug Dhug Dhug

And who would deny that a Bullet is a Bullet because of its silencor sound. The very characteristic sound, which is recognizable even from a distance. I was told in this workshop, that it is these different kinds of silencers that are responsible for the change in the sound of Dhug Dhug Dhug.

Pride and Passion

For many in India, Bullets bikes from Enfield Motors, has been their Harley Davidsons, their Hendersons and their Excelsiors. In places like the United States where Cruiser bikes make up almost 60 of the bikers share, it is common to see Harleys. In India however, the presence of the economical low cc bikes have made it difficult for the cruisers to make its presence felt. Having said that, this could have worked to the Bullet’s advantage. The list of its owners is small, but I am sure that everyone of them is a proud owner of it.

The sound lingers on

Bullets have often been modified to make it look like Harleys, but the essence and the pride remains loyal to the Bullet.The sound lingers on your head for a long time. A friend said the other day, “Once you have experienced the Bullet, there is absolutely no other bike that would even come close in its experience.”

Inspector

These Enfield bikes in my opinion are purchased as a result of a passion for the machine and a passion for the journey on that machine. It is only when that liking from the inside becomes evident, a person decides to buy a Bullet.

With a Bullet, you do not only buy the bike, you buy a Legacy and Live with it.

Memories

The best way to travel in New York is to take the trains and the subways. The design of the stations are interesting and the long hallways make an interesting perspective.  Also walking around the city is lovely. Unfortunately I did not get to do that much, as it was raining. So I took some special interest in the interiors, and found that it in indeed a sight to behold.

Inside the Penn

The subway is the lifeline of the city. I was told that this was one of the oldest in the country, and is still a marvel in terms of its infrastructure and the precision with which the time table is followed. The tracks, the wooden and metal pillars, the old platforms, the strangers on the platform, the unique smell, all makes it an interesting subject to study. One could spend hours at these stations, and just observe people’s actions and behaviors.

The Wait

The trains are packed during rush hours and finding a seat is difficult, if not impossible. The people you meet on the trains and subways are interesting too, though I was a bit uncomfortable in striking a conversation with people around. A lot of the people did not sport a smile and that was something that did strike me.

Have a Seat

One of the things I have seen in numerous Hollywood movies is the Central Station. Standing there I had a smile on my face. It was a moment that I would cherish for a long time. Being there for a a short while, I notice how there is a continuous flow of people from inside to outside to inside. Everyone seemed to be a hurry. The huge American Flag that hung above, and the fast moving public below was a perfect signifier of the fast paced life-style of the people in US metros.

Central Station

A trip to New York cannot be complete without visiting the Financial District. A place that controls a lot of the world’s economy. A place on whose progress depends the markets of numerous other countries of the world. I think that in the times of the recession, this has become more clear now.

Wall Street

And if Wall Street and the entire financial district, is something one cannot miss, one really misses the buildings of the World Trade Centers. A friend has her office in the right side building that you see here. I am eagerly awaiting the day when the Freedom Tower comes up at the location of the World Trade Center.

Remembering Twin Towers

One of the things that surprised me in my stay in the US was the religious fervor amongst the people. It was very contradicting to the pre-conceived notions about the religious sentiments of the country that I had. It was hence good to see the church very centrally located there near the Financial Disctrict. It was another of those re-affirming in the presence of the almighty, moment.

Divine Presence

A lot would agree that in order to see the beauty of the New York, one has to take a ride to one of the islands that are nearby the main boroughs. That is also when you get to see the famous New York Skyline. Though now, the skyline looks incomplete without the presence of the twin towers. And hence I have to give it to Chicago, for having the best skyline in the US. Going away from the mainland, I notice a sail powered yatch, going where the winds taketh it. Somewhere deep within me, I make a wish of doing that someday.

And as one enters back to the mainland, the Brooklyn Bridge in all its might, catches one’s attention. This again has been a set and backdrop for numerous movies all around the world, and it was a pleasure just to see it in reality, right there in front of my eyes.

And how can one forget the Statue of Liberty, when visiting New York. Although I was little disappointed by the cloudy day and the lack of time, the sheer joy on seeing something which I had seen in a sticker when I was small, made the experience memorable. Never had I thought when I was a kid that I would be seeing it right there in front of me.

Showing the way always

I saw only a glimpse of the wonderful city that is New York. There were interesting people, interesting means of transport, a melting pot for almost all cultures of the world, the city screaming in all its might due to the July 4th celebrations. I am dead sure that there a zillion other things to explore.

Intimacy

It was a short visit to the city, and I would have loved to stay more in order to get a better feel of the city. However due to time constraints, I was unable to do so. After more than a year, when I see the pictures again, I feel like going back again. Memories of the city make me Nostalgic. I know for a fact that I would definitely be going back there someday. I have the Fashion Capital, the China Towns amongst the other things to explore.

Till then, I will do with these photographs and a smile at having been there in one of the most amazing place in the world.

Jeene Do

At the very basic of thoughts, one would say why have someone bother about the way others live their lives. Very well said. Isn’t is everyone for themselves. So do not bother about me. Let me live my life. I am fine the way I am. The problems are mine. The successes are mine. I am the center and I am circumference of my world. It starts with me, it ends with me. ‘It’s my life’ said a famous singer.

Live and Let Live

Just when you were thinking that being selfish and being satisfied for oneself was the only way a person lived their life, someone comes along and says, well, it has to be a two way process. It cannot be a just that you live. You have to ensure that other’s live too. Thus one expands their thinking. It’s not only you, but also who is around you. You become sensitive to things. You see things differently and they make a whole lot of sense.

I am then stopped by the words Awaz Do (Blow Horn) and Dipper flashing straight at me. Yes I am in India. Its perfectly alright to blow the horn of the vehicle when you are overtaking or have a point to make. What is sad that often people honk for no reason at all. In spite of all this, India is a place that I missed so much. Something below the Dipper catches my attention. A truck in front of me was labeling me a foreigner. Or was it a mere co-incidence that I had just returned from the US after two years. Was that a long period to term me a foreigner? I wonder … I wonder.

Equality in Religion

One of the reasons I love India is the rich cultural mix that it possesses. The very fact that almost all of the world’s major religions thrive harmoniously in India is a miracle. And what surprises me the most is that when I speak to the common man, the people on the streets, the people in the small towns, have a common understanding. They all love their faith, but at the same time respect the other too. The trucks go one step further. It caught my attention that there was a religious symbol of the Muslims (the 786) and the Hindus (the Jay Ma Sherawali) on the same truck. It made me question, as to whose religious identity was the truck portraying? Was is the owner, or the order, or simply a hidden message in the text that God is one and we are all the part of the same cosmos.

Bridal Affair

The fascination for decoration never goes unnoticed. Brands lose their identities often. Logos are modified just to make a “better” appearance. Almost every truck vehicle would have a face painted on it. And the moment you have a face, the idea is to make it as beautiful as possible. And what can be more beautiful than painting it like a bride.

Dulhan hi Dahej Hai

With the thoughts of a bridal makeup still lingering in my mind, I walk around and here is a message for all of us in the society to follow. Hate to admit, but this still exists in the country widely. But if one was to understand it carefully, it makes so much sense.

Population Control

And if you thought that the truck graphics ended their messages with just the wedding, you are wrong. There is a clearly written message that could serve as a solution for India’s growing population. Families should have only two kids. Else what happens? Well, there is a population explosion and there will not be enough place for all of us on the planet. How neat!

Family Business

And if you cannot find a job elsewhere, why not take up your family business. This was a dhaba that was mostly used by truck drivers to take meals. We had stopped here for taking tea. We were surprised to see that there was three generations of the same family working in the restaurant.

Chak De Phatte

I guess the idea is in being good at what you do. Chak De Phatte, or Just Do It, as the Nike people would call it. I think that in order to know the success or a failure of any idea, one has to just experience it first hand. That is the best possible way. Being involved in setting up numerous startups presently, I see this as a valuable advise.

Parishram Ke Alawaa

And how to you succeed in them? Well you keep working hard diligently. There is no other way than the hard way. I think this is a well known fact, but often people end up trying to taking the short cut route. That is wrong. For me, I know that the harder I get, the luckier I get.

I think that the most emotionally and soul satisfying experience comes from the fact that I am in India, viewing these things, that inspire me so much. It is with all pride that I flaunt my nationality, and am glad that I get to explore the things that I am passionate about!
